Permanent Jewelry

What is Permanent Jewelry?

Permanent jewelry is a custom-fit, clasp-free accessory that is welded directly onto you, creating a seamless and stylish piece you never have to take off. The process is quick, painless, and tailored to your personal style.

Whether you’re celebrating a special moment, matching with loved ones, or simply treating yourself, permanent jewelry is a unique and meaningful way to wear your style effortlessly!

How It Works:

Step 2

Once you choose your chain and any charms, we custom-fit the piece to your wrist, ankle, finger, or neck. We’ll work with you to make sure the fit is just right—adjusting the chain until you're completely happy with how it sits before we weld it in place.

Step 1

Getting permanent jewelry is quick, painless, and completely safe. Catch us in your neighborhood at one of our pop-up events and browse 150+ options of high-quality chains, charms, and engravable blanks.

Step 3

A small, safe spark from our welding tool fuses the chain, no heat ever touches your skin. The entire process takes just a few minutes and leaves you with a durable, beautiful piece you'll never have to take off.

Want to make it even more personal? You can add a custom engraved charm to your piece—featuring names, dates, initials, or even photos. Just head over to the Custom Engraving section on our site to explore your options!

Gold-filled

Gold-filled jewelry is made by pressure-bonding a thick layer of genuine 14K gold to a durable metal alloy core. By U.S. standard, it must contain at least 5% real gold by total weight, making it far more substantial than gold-plated pieces. Durable, water-resistant, and suitable for most sensitive skin, gold-filled jewelry is designed for everyday wear and can maintain its color and shine for many years with proper care.

Metal Options

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is crafted from 92.5% pure silver blended with small amounts of other metals for added strength and durability. It is hypoallergenic (to most), high-quality, and a timeless choice for everyday wear. While sterling silver can naturally tarnish over time due to air, moisture, or certain products, tarnish is surface-level and easily removed—restoring its original shine with simple cleaning.

PVD /Ion-Plated Stainless Steel

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) bonds a layer of real gold (usually 18K, deeper yellow in color) to stainless steel using a vacuum process, creating a strong, tarnish-resistant finish. This method forms a durable surface that is hypoallergenic (to most), water-safe, and ideal for everyday or permanent jewelry. Unlike traditional plating, PVD is designed to resist fading, flaking, and tarnishing—maintaining its shine through daily wear.

Gold Plated

Gold Plated (electroplated) Gold-plated jewelry is made by applying a thin layer of real gold over a base metal (usually brass) using an electrical bonding process. Because the gold layer is delicate, it is best suited for occasional or seasonal wear rather than permanent jewelry. Over time, exposure to friction, moisture, and everyday wear will cause the finish to fade. At Linked by Design, we do not use electroplated materials.

Metal FAQs

  • Tarnish is NOT permanent! So there’s no need to worry. It’s simply a natural reaction called oxidation that can slightly dull or darken the surface of metal over time—most commonly with silver.

The metals we use for permanent jewelry are carefully chosen for their beauty, durability, and strong resistance to tarnishing during normal, everyday wear. Many clients experience little to no tarnish. Occasionally, things like moisture, chemicals, or environmental exposure may affect the metal’s surface.

If tarnish does appear, it can usually be removed with gentle cleaning, restoring your jewelry’s natural shine. Because everyone’s body chemistry is unique, minor variations can occur from person to person.

For full details, see our Aftercare & Warranty section.

  • If you ever notice slight darkening on the skin, don’t worry—it’s not always tarnish. Sometimes it’s simply metallic abrasion, a harmless and temporary surface reaction.

Metallic abrasion can occur when gentle friction between the jewelry and skin combines with everyday factors like lotions, oils, sweat, or natural minerals. This may create a faint, dark residue on the skin—not on the jewelry itself.

It’s important to know this does not mean the jewelry is tarnished or poor quality, and it does not damage the metal. It’s simply a normal surface interaction that can vary based on lifestyle, skin chemistry, and daily activity.

  • While no metal is completely maintenance-free, these steps help reduce tarnish and abrasion:

    • Keep jewelry clean and dry, especially after sweating or swimming

    • Avoid harsh lotions, perfumes, sunscreens, and harsh chemicals directly on the jewelry

    • Rinse with clean water after exposure to chlorine, saltwater, or well water

    • Gently clean regularly using the provided cleaning kit

Proper care significantly extends the appearance and longevity of permanent jewelry.
